You'll Never Leave Harlan Fic Exchange: Rules and Guidelines

Basic Rules of the Exchange

Exchanges are not a new thing, but for anyone who has not participated in one before, this is how it goes:

1) Sign up for the exchange by filling out the sign up form and emailing it to norgbelulah at gmail dot com.
2) Receive your assignment via email.
3) Write a complete (no first chapters of long fics or WIPs) 1,000 word (minimum) fic from the information given to you in your assignment.
4) Have someone beta read your fic.*
5) Submit your fic to the mods before the deadline.**
6) Once the fics are posted, comment on your gift fic and THANK YOUR AUTHOR.
7) Give comment love to as many authors as you can. Bask in general squee and excitement.

*The mod realizes how difficult it may be to find someone willing to beta read for Justified who is not participating in this exchange. There will be a beta post on this community that will be advertised around to our affiliates. Additionally, keep in mind beta readers do not need to be familiar with canon to edit for grammar, etc.

**Extensions will be granted on a case by case basis. If you know you have to drop out, inform the mod ASAP. A pinch hitter request post will go up shortly after sign ups open, volunteer if you can.

Sign Ups will open Sunday March 11th.

Sign Ups will close Sunday Mar 25th.

Assignments will be out by Friday March 30th.

Justified Season Three finale airs April 10th.

Check in by emailing the mod at least 100 words of rough draft before end of day April 30th.

Deadline for submitting your fic is Sun May 27th.

Mod will post fics throughout the following week, Monday May 28th - Friday June 1st.

Author reveals May 1st.

A Few Other Guidelines

Read the rules/guidelines carefully. For some this is old news and a walk in the park, for others it is not. If you are new to exchanges and/or if there's something you don't understand, ask.

You need to be a livejournal user and a member of nvrleaveharlan. The exchange will be coordinated through the community, and all participants will be expected to keep up to date. Sorry, dreamwidth people, it will be easier to ensure that everyone stays in touch with the community this way.

Respond promptly to moderator e-mails and keep current with community postings. The mod will not be spamming your inbox, but there may be times she needs to get in touch with you. Please make sure you'll be able to check your e-mail regularly.

On crossovers and AUs. Per, the poll that was conducted of prospective participants, crossovers and AUs are fair game for requesting. However, please be kind to your mod (who has to match everyone up) and to your fic writer, and include some non-genre-bending prompts on your list as well. Of the maximum five you are allotted, a good mix would be two canon/pre-canon prompts and three crossover/AU prompts, or vice versa. Additionally, remember that not everyone is able to write any old fandom that you choose, so consider requesting a specific genre of fandom to cross, or consider larger fandoms with which more writers would be familiar.

If you volunteer to be a writer of crossovers, as stated under the sign up form, expect a follow up email(s) from the mod requesting more information about what fandoms you are willing to cross with Justified.

On matching authors to recipients. The mod is going to try crazy hard to match people up as well as she can. However, she cannot guarantee that you will receive an assignment perfectly in sync with the kind of fic you are looking to write as an author. Keep an open mind and try not too be crazy specific on prompts or too negative on writing preferences while filling out the sign up sheet. Justified is a difficult fandom to write for and deserves a little breathing room.

Additionally, your mod is a newbie mod and this is basically a big crazy experiment. Please bear with her.

More about withdrawing. If you need an extension or if you need to drop out of the exchange altogether, e-mail the mod as soon as possible. It's fine if something comes up and you need to pull out of the exchange, but please, please PLEASE tell the mod. Be honest with yourself about whether or not you can finish, and e-mail the mod if you can't do it. There's no shame in withdrawing. But it is a dick move to disappear on the exchange without a word. Please, don’t be a dick. If you abandon the exchange without emailing the mod, she reserves the right to ban you from future challenges and exchanges hosted on nvrleaveharlan.

Don't contact your recipient. The idea of a secret exchange is that it's a surprise. If you have a question to ask your recipient, e-mail the mod and she will find out the answer for you. Please don't post your fic to another community or the AO3 until the exchange is over. Try not to out yourself on public journal entries or other forums where participants can see.

Be gracious when commenting. Participants come from all backgrounds and levels of experience and gift fics will vary. This is more about squee than it is about concrit. Just as in real life, etiquette requires that you be polite regardless of what you receive.

No character/ship bashing AT ALL. This will not be tolerated. Please keep discussion on all exchange posts on an even keel and comments on fic especially positive. The mod reserves the right to delete comments and ban participants from future exchanges at her discretion.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to leave a comment or PM/email the mod.
